Cairns Railway Station

Jack had a role in the design of the Cairns Railway Station, which we understand has since succumbed to further development. Any further information on this would be much appreciated.

Brisbane railway quadruplication

As Principal Railway Architect with Queensland Rail, Jack presided over the design and construction of a number of Brisbane railway stations in the 50s/60s, during a period of line quadruplication, dieselisation and and electrification. Jack had a great respect for team member and fellow architect, Polish-born, German-educated Jan Kral who was responsible for much of the design. Notably, a "post-modernist" influence was introduced to the design; heritage-listed Graceville Railway Station (opened in 1958) is an example of this.

The Department of Environment and Resources Management, in 2009, recommended that Graceville Railway Station be included as a 'State Heritage Place' on the 'Queensland Heritage Register'. The full recommendation document details the extent of railway modernisation in Brisbane over the 50s and early  60s, and mentions Jack's role as Principal Railway Architect.  A fax copy of the document is provided at the link below (thanks to Cairns Steam for posting this on its website):

Redbank Railway Workshops

Jack was the Principal Railway Architect with Queensland Rail and presided over the design and construction of the Redbank Railway Workshops. Opened in 1958, the Redbank workshops eased pressure on the busy Ipswich Railway Workshops and was central to the introduction of diesel electric locomotives. The Redbank Railway Workshops are now Queensland's major railway workshops and are known as the "Redbank Centre of Excellence" (1).
